Who is Michael van Gerwen (MVG)? The story of three-time world champion Mighty Mike

MVG, the Dutch darts player Michael van Gerwen, is one of the few names on tour with three PDC World Championship titles, nicknamed Mighty Mike. Here's who he is, his career highlights, what he's said about his own practice habits, and the darts he throws.

Who is MVG: Mighty Mike from the Netherlands

Van Gerwen was born in 1989 in Boxtel, Netherlands, nicknamed Mighty Mike. He showed talent early, winning the WDF World Masters at just 17, the youngest player ever to take that title at the time. After turning pro with the PDC, he quickly became one of the hardest players on tour to beat.

Three world titles, second only to Phil Taylor

Van Gerwen has won three PDC World Championships in his career: 2014, 2017 and 2019. The 2014 win made him the youngest PDC World Champion at the time. His career tally of major titles is commonly counted at 48, second only to Phil Taylor in PDC history. He held the world No. 1 ranking for most of the stretch from 2014 to 2021.

His practice routine isn't what you'd expect

Most people assume top players practise for hours every day, but van Gerwen has admitted that at his peak he actually practised very little. He's said his usual pre-match prep is throwing continuously for two to two and a half hours, and that in practice he likes simple scoring games like "121" because they don't require much thought and let him keep throwing. He's also said he doesn't care much whether practice scores are good, since practice can never replicate the pressure and atmosphere of a real match. In his own words, he's not lazy: he just genuinely likes throwing darts.

2025 final: the title he handed to a 17-year-old

At the 2025 PDC World Championship final, van Gerwen lost 3–7 to 17-year-old Luke Littler, missing out on a fourth world title. The match is often described as a changing of the guard in darts: a 20-year veteran on one side, a teenager making his final debut on the other.

His darts: a Winmau signature set

Van Gerwen currently plays for Winmau, throwing his own 21.5g signature darts. His official site also lists other partners including BMW and Kempinski hotels. If you've seen him on a broadcast, that's usually the set in his hand.
