Who Is Nobuhiro Yamamoto? The Osaka Veteran Who Reached the PDC Worlds

Nobuhiro Yamamoto is one of Japan's longest-running steel-tip darts players, the traditional bristle-board format rather than the soft-tip electronic machines you'll find in most bars. In July 2022 he won the PDC Japan Championship, which sent him straight to the following year's PDC World Championship. Here's who he is, how he earned that trip, and where he's competed across the PDC, BDO, and WDF.

Who is Nobuhiro Yamamoto: the craftsman from Osaka

Yamamoto was born on November 12, 1977, in Osaka Prefecture. He throws right-handed and turned professional in 2009, competing under the Japanese darts body "PERFECT" (Ippan Shadan Hojin PERFECT). His nickname, "The Craftsman," fits a player who's stayed near the top of Japan's domestic rankings since around 2012, when he picked up multiple tour titles in a single year.

2022: winning the PDC Japan Championship and reaching the Worlds

The defining result of Yamamoto's career came in July 2022, when he beat Sho Katsumi 5–4 in the final of the PDC Japan Championship to take the title and lock in a spot at the 2023 PDC World Championship. That tournament marked his first appearance on darts' biggest stage. In round one, he faced England's Martin Lukeman and lost 0–3, ending his run in the first round; simply reaching the Worlds is already a career highlight for a player whose base is entirely domestic.

A career spanning the PDC, BDO, and WDF

Yamamoto has competed across three organizations: the PDC (2014–present), the BDO (2015–2020), and the WDF (2015–present), a rarer path among Japanese players, most of whom stick to one system. He currently plays for DYNASTY, throws 18-gram darts, and walks on to B'z's "Be There." His DYNASTY soft tip signature line, ORTEGA, is in our online darts shop: search for 山本信博 (the shop is in Chinese, so search his name in Japanese characters).

From a fixture on Japan's domestic tour circuit to a player who beat his way into the PDC Japan Championship and a spot at the Worlds, Nobuhiro Yamamoto's path is a good example of building a name at home before stepping onto the international stage. It's a reminder that darts rewards years of steady practice as much as raw talent, whether you're chasing a world stage or just trying to hit more trebles on a Friday night.
