Taipei's East District, the stretch between Zhongxiao Dunhua and Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall, hides more in its back lanes than you'll ever see from the main roads. Here's a mix of Japanese, Taiwanese and American restaurants, plus select shops, cafés and after-dark bars, with AI DARTS in the middle of it. First: how to actually do the East District
- Most of the select shops and cafés tucked in the lanes don't open until around 2pm, so don't plan a morning shop crawl. Do brunch first, shop mid-afternoon, then let the lanes fill up after 6pm.
- The whole area sits almost exactly between Zhongxiao Dunhua and Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall stations (about a 12–15 min walk apart): start from whichever exit is closer to your first stop. Street parking is scarce; YouBike stations are dense.
- The restaurant lanes (like Ln. 216, Sec. 4, Zhongxiao E. Rd and Ln. 160, Sec. 1, Dunhua S. Rd) get busy after 7pm on weeknights and can have waits Fri–Sat; early evening (6–7:30pm) is the quiet window.
Japanese: yakitori and izakaya
創作串燒野崎 (Ln. 33, Aly. 216, Sec. 4, Zhongxiao E. Rd, ~6–8 min from Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall Exit 2): a skewer-focused izakaya with a rotating seasonal menu; the pork-roll skewer platter is the one to order.
起上小法師 (Ln. 160, Sec. 1, Dunhua S. Rd, ~3–4 min from Zhongxiao Dunhua): one of the few spots in the area doing a dedicated beef-tongue set meal, thin and thick cut options.
三虎居酒屋 (same lane, Ln. 160): open until 2am, no-frills yakitori for a late-night follow-on.
Taiwanese: noodles and rotisserie chicken
天下三絕麵食館 (Ln. 27, Sec. 4, Ren'ai Rd, ~5–6 min from Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall): Michelin Bib Gourmand-listed (2019–2022) beef noodle soup, nicknamed the "Rolls-Royce of beef noodle." A real institution, not a tourist trap.
老爺有隻雞 (Ln. 40, Sec. 4, Zhongxiao E. Rd, ~5 min from Zhongxiao Dunhua): medicinal-herb barrel-roasted whole chicken, in a more modern izakaya-style space.
American: barbecue and pizza
ABV美式餐酒館 (Ln. 236, Sec. 1, Dunhua S. Rd): signature whiskey-infused barbecue, plus a full bar for a before-or-after drink.
C Pickza (Ln. 290, Guangfu S. Rd): build-your-own pizza, ready in about 2 minutes, paired with a craft beer list, good for groups.
Select shops and dessert
VVG Something 好樣本事 (Aly. 40, Ln. 181, Sec. 4, Zhongxiao E. Rd, ~10 min from Zhongxiao Dunhua Exit 7): a 13-ping space once named one of the world's most beautiful bookstores, mixing books, stationery, tableware and imported vintage home goods, plus small rotating exhibitions. Check hours on Google Maps or IG before you go.
好正商行 (Aly. 48, Ln. 4, Sec. 4, Civic Blvd): "grown-up" boozy gelato, no artificial additives, a good mid-shop-crawl stop.
Old-house cafés and design spaces
Cafe Ceres (Ln. 170, Sec. 4, Zhongxiao E. Rd, ~5 min from Zhongxiao Dunhua): a corner café in an old building with floor-to-ceiling windows; the smoked-salmon mille-feuille and strawberry chiffon cake are the ones to try.
boven雜誌圖書館 (Aly. 5, Ln. 107, Sec. 1, Fuxing S. Rd): a paid-entry library of 50,000+ international design and lifestyle magazines, heavy on Japanese titles, with a café upstairs. Note: this one's actually closer to Zhongxiao Fuxing Station (~15–18 min from the main East District zone), worth the detour, but not a walk-by stop.
After-Dark Drinks
Book ing Bar (1F, Aly. 10, Ln. 345, Sec. 4, Ren'ai Rd): a hidden bar behind a bookshelf door; push the right book and it opens. Magician-founded, fairy-tale cocktail menu. It's in the exact same alley as AI DARTS, a few doors down, so darts and cocktails can be the same night without moving. Open 20:00–02:00.
MMO Beer (Guangfu S. Rd, ~5 min from Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall Exit 2): one of the few Taipei bars that actually brews its own beer rather than importing cans. No cover, walk-in, occasional themed listening nights. Closed Tuesdays.
